Our Story

Between the years of 1912 and 1914, Sunday School was started in the old Gapway School Building which was located where the present church is now. In 1914, the first church building was completed.
All of this was an extension of Cherry Grove Baptist Church.

In the year 1917, Gapway Church was formed and the first three deacons were ordained; Richard Turbeville, Emory Strickland, and Hez Strickland. The first pastor was Reverend Charlie Bullock followed by Reverend Neil Stanley, Reverend G.R. Hunt, Reverend J.F. Conley, Reverend L.C. Barnes, Reverend S.A. Hatley, Reverend Joe Suggs, Reverend Harftford K. Marlowe, Reverend Dock Gore, Reverend L.C Barnes, and Reverend R.W. Strickland. During the period in which R.W. Strickland was pastor, the new church building was completed in 1956, by the people in the community. Reverend Elbert Sikes was our next pastor, followed by Revered Bob Anderson, Reverend Drew Hardee, Reverend Dennis Williams, Reverend Jimmy Canes, Reverend Glis Cribb, Reverend Larry Nobles, Reverend Earl Nobles, Reverend Mark Player, and at present, Reverend Austin Long.

We completed our new church fellowship hall, located next to the church, in 2012.

The church has been through many changes, all for the glory of God. We now have five Sunday School Classes ranging in ages from the smallest to the "most seasoned". We have choir practice and prayer meeting each week on Wednesday nights. Our Women on Missions group meets on the second Monday night of each month. Our Vacation Bible School is a full week in June. We still have Spring and Fall Revivals and an annual Christmas Play.
